LANDOWNERSHIP SURVEYS
The Survey
A survey is carried out in a systematic, comprehensive and methodical manner.
To carry out the survey relevant details are taken from all available records
(the chartulary, search, factor's files etc.)
of every known writ, whether present in these records or merely referenced.
These are entered into a database.
The writs are arranged in chronological order of final date of execution
and given a writ number.
All writs for a particular subjects are grouped, again in chronological order,
under the writ number of the founding writ.
This is called the index number and this appears on any maps produced.
An index is produced of all disposals - feus, dispositions and long leases -
all writs being cross-referenced to the estate records and public records
(Register of Sasines, Register of Entails, Books of Council & Session, Sheriff Court Books etc.).
A Titles Index is also produced of all writs, similarly cross-referenced,
to all titles in favour of owners of the estate, past and present.
A Landownership Survey
ensures a comprehensive computer record
of all transactions which is easily searchable,
saving considerable time and effort.
